About Er Chen Tang

Also known as Citrus and Pinellia Combination, Two Cured Decoction, and Er Chen Wan, Er Chen Tang is a Sun Ten Formulas product that has been around since the Han Dynasty (around the 1st century CE). For thousands of years, it is the primary treatment for phlegm accumulation (phlegm-dampness). Phlegm-dampness is a condition that occurs when the lungs and spleen cannot transform and transport the body fluids effectively. This can happen due to an exterior pathogen that has entered the system, disrupting the normal function of the lung and spleen.

Er Chan Tang helps soothe upper and middle burner symptoms, including cough with clear or white sputum, dizziness, epigastrium, focal distention, stifling sensation in the chest, nausea, and palpitations. Er Chen Tang is also found effective when used to treat excessive drooling in children, emphysema, hangover, goiter, chronic gastritis, morning sickness, peptic ulcer, hypersomnia, and Meniere’s Disease.

Er Chen Tang Uses

Besides the classical actions of the formula mentioned above, Er Chen Tang also has the following modern applications:

Respiratory – It can help treat chronic bronchitis caused by damp phlegm in the lungs, especially when combined with Ma Xing Gan Shi Tang.

Digestive – Paired with appropriate formulas, such as Jian Zhong Tang, Bao He Wan, or Li Zhong Tang, it can treat gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea, as well as abdominal and epigastric pain caused by cold Qi attack in the middle burner, food stagnation, or irregular food intake that occur due to phlegm retention or dampness.

Psychological disorders – It can fight insubstantial phlegm that clouds the senses and mind. The most typical symptoms are, in this case, excessive sputum, poor sleep, mental confusion, depression, and apathy. Mind and sense fogginess is often seen in individuals with liver Qi constraint combined with chronic spleen Qi constraint.

SSRI Withdrawal Syndrome – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) are antidepressant medications. SSRI withdrawal syndrome comes with symptoms that fall in the categories of somatic, gastrointestinal, motor, neurologic, and psychiatric and are usually the outcome of phlegm-dampness accumulation. Combined with Gui Pi Tang and Ginseng, Er Chen Tang can help transform phlegm-damp and boost spleen Qi.

Er Chen Tang Ingredients

Zhi Ban Xia (Prepared Pinellia) – It helps restore Qi flow by removing the accumulation of phlegm that obstructs it. It has a dispersing and descending action and is also warm and acrid. Both of these attributes help drive the phlegm out. As for the slippery texture of the ingredient, it helps envelop and loosen the phlegm.

Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel) – It disperses clumped Qi to resolve phlegm. It is also warm and acrid, which fosters the dispersion of clumped Qi. However, unlike Zhi Ban Xia, Chen Pi is bitter and aromatic, which promotes the dispersion of cold, the revitalization of the spleen, and the drainage of dampness.

Fu Ling (Poria) – It can effectively metabolize fluid in the kidney, lung, and spleen while also regulating water passages in the body. Poria even improves the action of Chen Pi and Zhi Ban Xia by directing fluid accumulation out (via urination), freeing water passages, and supplementing the spleen. Fu Ling can resolve phlegm and prevent its reformation. Plus, it carries heart nourishing qualities.

Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-Fried Licorice Root) – It assists Fu Ling to reduce insomnia and palpitations and nourish the heart and also further supplements the spleen.
