They are believed to support normal macular pigment integrity and density through antioxidant properties. In addition, they support the protective layer formation that filters light, supporting normal photoreceptor function in the macula. Increased intake of these carotenoids is associated with increased macular concentration. Additionally, recent research has revealed that the combination may target different areas in the retina to support normal retinal function, photoreceptor function, and color vision.
