About Mycology Research Labs

Mycology Research Laboratories Ltd. (MRL) is a UK-based manufacturer of both mycology and non-mycology formulas as dietary supplements. Founded in 1997, it utilizes a proprietary Japanese production technology to develop its mushroom nutrition products as functional foods. Their products contain carefully selected strains of several different types of mushrooms that are grown in California, which are carefully cultivated under the regulations that are set by the California Organic Food Act of 1990, and then harvested at the ideal time. The chosen mushroom strains are selected based on their stability (purity) and overall bioactivity.

To ensure people receive the maximum health benefits of these mushroom nutrition formulas, the company does not use extracts. Instead, they prefer to include the young fruit body (primordia and mycelium) of the mushroom, which is then cultivated on an edible, autoclaved substrate and becomes a contamination-free biomass, with zero presence of heavy metals, bacteria, fungi, or pesticides. Finally, the biomass is dried and powdered (then tableted) to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) regulations (food grade standards) right after its cultivation, in either the USA or the Netherlands.

Mycology Explained

Mycology is a particular scientific field that studies mushroom nutrition. As of now, mushroom nutrition gathered an enormous amount of attention and focus on countries like China, Japan, and Korea. In fact, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a specific branch that revolves around mushroom nutrition. Therefore, it is no surprise that in most TCM formulas, at least a couple of the compounds (of the 15-20 in total) are mushrooms, at least most of the time. This means that TCM practitioners are indeed the most capable when it comes to working with mushroom nutrition. All that until recently because we finally see Europeans having a strong focus on the immune-boosting properties of mushroom nutrition. An increasing number of European clinical trials are conducted to redefine and reconfirm the health benefits that come from mycology in non-Asian populations.

Controls & Quality Standards

Mycology Research Labs recognizes the significance of reconfirming quality control standards in both specification and cultivation when working with mushroom nutrition. This is because the cultivation process is distinguished by a give-and-take between the mushrooms and the area of cultivation – the mushrooms not only emit enzymes during that particular time but also reabsorb enzymes from the land in which they are cultivated. As a result, they “grab” chemicals, bacteria, and metals from the soil, which raises considerable concerns. The two primary puzzling questions that need to be answered are:

  • How clean is the substrate? - In countries where human waste is used as fertilizer, it has been found that mushrooms that are cultivated there have high concentrations of e.Coli. Also, where there is an overuse of pesticides, the mushrooms come with high contents of heavy metals. In both cases, we are dealing with contamination of the raw materials, which is a major concern.
  • Does the label reflect the exact mushroom type? – In some instances, some mushroom types are marketed as another mushroom species (i.e., Cordyceps sinesis instead of Cordyceps militarias).

To ensure all MRL formulas meet the high GMP standards, the company conducts quality controls. The cultivation process of the raw materials, for example, is certified organic by QAI, and the formulas undergo microbiological testing, which includes quality checks for:

  • Yeast and mold
  • Aerobic bacteria
  • Enterobacteria
  • Coliform
  • E.coli

Best-selling Products

Some of the top-rated Mycology Research Labs formulas are:

Coriolus Versicolor – The formula contains Coriolus Versicolor (also referred to as Turkey Tail) – a mushroom widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a tonic. It is also found to improve the function of the immune system while also protecting from common cold and flu.

Triton-MRL – It contains primordia and mycelium of three different mushroom types, Lentinula edodes, Cordyceps sinensis, and Ganoderma lucidum, which are evidenced to fight everyday fatigue and strengthen the immune system.

Maitake-MRL – Another immune-supporting formula that includes the young fruiting body of Grifola frondosa mushroom (Maitake mushroom), which is rich in antioxidants, beta-glucans, copper, fiber, vitamins B and C, minerals, and amino acids. It can help lower (bad) cholesterol levels and could also prevent breast cancer.

Reishi-MRL – Reishi mushroom contains chemicals that are considered to deliver a wide range of health benefits. It could have a positive effect on some urinary symptoms in men with enlarged prostates, breast cancer-related fatigue, hepatitis B (improves liver function), and clogged arteries (combats chest pain and shortness of breath). It can also boost the immune system, lower high blood pressure, and heal cold sores.
