Honey Gardens

About Honey Gardens

Honey Gardens is a manufacturer of high-quality, Apitherapy raw honey and plant-based products. Their formulas are made from medicinal plants, flower pollen, and truly raw honey.

The company was founded in 1965 when two visionary brothers started keeping bees on the top field of the family farm. They soon jumped into studies of entomology and agricultural sciences at Cornell University. After finishing their studies, they began working for beekeepers in Finger Lakes (NY) – their role was to inspect bees for the State of Vermont. Part of their vision is to connect people to the land while also supporting the work of the bees. To achieve that, the company focuses on helping keep land from development, promoting a sustainable relationship between humans and nature.

To date, Honey Gardens has worked with more than 1,200 colonies in the St. Lawrence River Valley (NY) and the Champlain Valley (Vermont) and has also gifted numerous hives that were used to train the locals in beekeeping and pollination to local beekeepers.

From Raw Honey to the Development of Propolis Spray

In the beginning, the two brothers were working with around 180 bee colonies, which gave them the idea to gradually introduce raw, farm-style honey to the markets of Vermont and Boston. At a time when people would consume liquid heated honey that was sold at supermarkets, getting your hands on raw, unfiltered honey was a big deal. People could, finally, get the nutrition and good taste of raw honey in their attempt to lead healthy lives.

A few years later, the brothers drew inspiration from homebred health and tradition and developed the Elderberry syrup formula. One of the company founders then decided to bring together a team of herbalists to help him expand the company product list. This led to the development of Wild cherry bark syrup, Salve, and Propolis spray.

Raw or Concentrate Propolis--Which is Better?

Honey Gardens has formulas falling into one of the following four distinct categories (1) Raw honey, (2) Raw honey syrups, (3) Propolis, and (4) Varietal raw honey. Many people wonder whether raw and concentrate propolis is the very same thing. Honey Gardens explains that the first contains 30-50% wax and has not been cleaned while the latter is heated, which allows the wax to melt out. This also allows us to have a cleaner resin of higher concentration, free from extraneous materials, such as heavy metals and bee parts. The concentrated propolis contains all the health benefits of its constituents, including minerals, antioxidant bioflavonoids, vitamins, pollen, essential oils, balsams, and resins. Speaking of pollen, it is worth saying that although it cannot be considered a perfect food (it lacks vital vitamins), it still is an excellent food source, which has twice the amount of iron of other highly nutritious foods, such as whole-wheat bread, beans, chicken, and beef. It is also one of the best natural sources of Niacin, Riboflavin, and Thiamine (all B-vitamins).

Royal Jelly – Sourcing & Testing it

Not all royal jelly is of the same quality. In fact, its potency varies and largely depends on the supplier. To ensure potency, it is paramount to test royal jelly for its 10-HAD (unique fatty acid). The Honey Gardens royal jelly is sourced only from reputable suppliers and is then tested in the state-of-the-art, in-house Honey Gardens laboratories for 10-HAD as a means to ensure it is 100% pure.

It should also be noted that fresh royal jelly should be processed in a way so that it preserves its nutritional value. For that reason, it must be frozen or blended with honey at room temperature. Now, you may hear about freeze-dried royal jelly powder, which is nothing more than fresh royal jelly that has been dehydrated (removed of all its water content). Due to its powdery form, it is easier and more convenient to use (also allows for more diverse use) and is best in softgels, chewables, or tablets.
