About BioGaia

BioGaia is a Swedish healthcare manufacturer of supreme quality, clinically proven probiotic formulas. For more than 30 years, an extended network of independent specialists and researchers has been creating patented and innovative dietary supplements that are recommended by healthcare professionals, pediatricians included, in over 100 countries. All BioGaia products contain a specific probiotic bacterium, namely Lactobacillus reuteri, which is found to have a strong adaptation to the human body. It also helps restore gut microbiome – the natural balance in the intestines. To this day, Lactobacillus reuteri has been tested in more than 200 trials and proven not only effective but also safe in both adults and children. The company strategy is based on a fivefold that includes sustainability, innovation, operational efficiency, customer focus, and growth.

The Birth of Lactobacillus Reuteri Back in the 1980s, two scientists were looking into the properties of different probiotics as a means to identify potential effects to help treat HIV. Lactobacillus reuteri was found to carry important qualities. At the same time, BioGaia founders – then importers of organic vegetables and yogurt from France - Peter Rothchild and Jan Annwall, were using Lactobacillus reuteri to preserve their products during their long trip. Fate brought them together with the two scientists some years later and started investigating whether and how Lactobacillus reuteri could be used as a natural alternative to antibiotics. They started with applying probiotics in animal food, replacing antibiotics, and the results were promising indeed.

Meanwhile, BioGaia was founded, in 1990. The research director of the company, Dr. Ivan Casas, was certain that newborn chickens, which were almost sterile at birth, were very sensitive to bad bacteria until they established their own microbial flora. Therefore, they had to receive important microorganisms from their mother to help create this flora, with Lactobacillus reuteri being one of the key bacteria that needed to be transferred from the mother to the newborn chick. That was the case with all mammals, he claimed, humans included. Ivan analyzed breast milk from many mothers in both South and North America to see if it contained Lactobacillus reuteri – it didn’t. However, he was convinced that if Mother Nature were to make the calls, this probiotic bacterium would be present in breast milk. A trip he made to the Andes and an analysis of some breast milk samples indeed proved that it contained several strains of Lactobacillus reuteri, one of which is being used in BioGaia’s formulas for its remarkable health-promoting qualities.

In 1991, BioGaia launched its first functional food product, Bifidus Reuteri Acidophilus (BRA Milk), which was the first probiotic milk in Europe, followed by probiotic cream cheese and juice shortly after. In 2000, the company decided to enter the dietary supplement sector. Today, BioGaia formulas are found in more than 10 countries across the globe, making them a leader in the field of probiotics.

Product Quality & Safety

BioGaia has high standards that the company ensures are followed from the selection of the suppliers and raw materials and throughout the manufacturing process, which is carried out per the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) regulations. The organization uses standardized routines and procedures and highly trained staff that ensures product quality and safety.

BioGaia is also focused on developing products from an ethical and environmental perspective. For that reason, they strive to design pure formulas, alongside vegan alternatives, which benefit from the special qualities of palm oil. Palm oil is found to help the live bacteria in BioGaia products retain their effect. The organization only purchases palm oil from members of the RSPO (Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil), given the ethical dilemma surrounding the production of palm oil and its environmental impact. BioGaia, though, uses minimal amounts of palm oil. At the same time, they invest in ongoing research for palm oil alternative option to be put into effect by 2023, in a way that will not affect product quality. To ensure transparency, the network of independent researchers who work on studying the safety and effects of the company formulas are encouraged to report the results of their studies in well-renowned medical journals, irrespective of the result. That way, the company aims for the highest possible scientific standards.
