About BioGaia

BioGaia is a Swedish healthcare manufacturer founded in 1990 that specializes in probiotic formulas containing the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri. Headquartered in Stockholm, BioGaia's mission is to improve human health by delivering clinically proven, trustworthy, and sustainable probiotic products. Their formulas aim to restore gut microbiome balance to support digestive, immune, oral, and bone health.

In the 1980s, BioGaia founders Peter Rothchild and Jan Annwall collaborated with scientists studying probiotics to treat HIV. They began investigating if Lactobacillus reuteri could serve as an antibiotic alternative based on its adaptability and health benefits observed in animals. This research laid the foundation for BioGaia's launch of the first probiotic milk in Europe in 1991, followed by other functional foods. Since 2000, BioGaia has focused on dietary supplements containing patented Lactobacillus reuteri strains studied extensively in over 200 clinical trials.

BioGaia operates facilities meeting pharmaceutical GMP standards to ensure product quality and safety. They aim to develop sustainable products, using RSPO-certified palm oil and investing in alternatives not affecting quality. Their network of independent researchers frequently publishes results in medical journals, upholding scientific integrity. Key products include Osfortis for bone/gut health, Prodentis for oral care, Gastrus for gastrointestinal issues, and Protectis formulations for immune and digestive support in adults and infants.
