TCM Approach to Joint Health

Bone and joint issues, according to TCM, states that blood stasis and the stagnancy of Qi is at the core of most issues. Bone health is connected to the kidneys which store Qi. When Qi is strong, it can stimulate the growth of marrow and nourish the skeleton. Acupuncture can also be beneficial to bone and joint health. Chinese herbs which can help support normal joint function are Qi Ye Lian by Plum Flower and AC-Q by Health Concerns. 

The Chinese believe that when wind, cold, and dampness penetrate the body's defenses and enter the muscles, tendons and joints, they can cause stiffness and pain. Pain can be caused by a number of factors including weather, poor diet, emotional factors, and lack of exercise.  Breathing exercises can help promote energy to circulate and yoga or tai chi can help reduce stiffness and increase flexibility.

In TCM, diet is an important part of well-being and in fact, digestion is related to joint health.  Poor digestion, poor circulation, and dietary toxins can all contribute to joint pain.  Eating foods rich in fiber, such as flaxseeds, oat bran, or rice bran help for better elimination.  Consume foods high in iron, such as broccoli, fish, lima beans, and peas.  Dairy and caffeine should be consumed in moderation.

Avoid citrus fruits, and vegetables such as peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, and white potatoes.  These foods can interfere with enzymes in the muscles and cause pain.  In addition, limit the amount of salt in your diet to very small amounts.  If overweight, losing excess pounds can relieve some of the pressure on joints. 

TCM formulas which address joint pain include Liquidambar 15, Acanthopanax 10, and Chiang Huo 13.  These formulas nourish the kidney, dispel dampness, and address joint pain and inflammation.  Tiger Balm Arthritis Rub and Spring Wind Amber Massage Salve can help soothe joint pain externally.
