About Gui Pi Tang

Translated into English, Gui Pi Tang means “Restore the Spleen Decoction” and is a formula first created by Yan Yonghe during the Song Dynasty in the 1300s. Through the course of time, it underwent several revisions. In the 16th century, two additional ingredients were added to the original formula, which increased not only the herbal product’s effectiveness on treating women’s disorders but also excessive worrying and the accompanying symptoms of insomnia and forgetfulness.

Gui Pi Tang Ingredients

Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) - It is used to tonify primal Qi and subsequent symptomatology, including shallow breathing, shortness of breath, and cold limbs. It also strengthens the spleen Qi and stomach, fights Lung Qi deficiency, alleviates thirst (for Xiao Ke syndrome), clears the mind, calms the spirit (blood deficiency and heart Qi deficiency), combats mental restlessness and confusion, insomnia, and dream-disturbed sleep. Also, benefits the kidneys from Yang and Qi deficiency.

Huang Qi (Astragalus Root) – It has immune-boosting properties and potent antibiotic qualities. It also combats fatigue, prevents daytime sweating, strengthens the lungs, and eliminates excess water weight.

Bai Zhu (Atractylodes) - An aromatic herb that is used to treat mental and physical fatigue, dizziness, edema, vomiting, and diarrhea. It can also reduce blood sugar levels and has a diuretic effect too. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is favored for the support it provides to the kidney functions while it is a strong Qi tonic that promotes healthy digestive system and bladder functions.

Zhi Gan Cao (Licorice) - Honey-fried licorice tonifies the spleen, nourishes Qi, harmonizes the stomach, restores pulse, protects the heart, stops cough, and helps relieve fatigue. It influences several channels, including the pericardium, liver, lung, kidney, heart, stomach, spleen, urinary bladder, and small intestine.

Dang Gui (Angelica Root) – An ingredient that nourishes the uterus, helps relieve anemic symptoms, regulates female hormones, stimulates blood circulation, helps with premenstrual and menopausal symptoms, and relieves constipation.

Long Yan Rou (Longan Fruit) - An herb with numerous attributes. It protects blood vessels and prevent the hardening of the arteries, fights aging, helps weight loss, fights fatigue, enhances physical fitness, promotes growth, tonifies the spleen, boosts energy levels, replenishes blood and Qi, and achieves a calm state of mind. It also fights forgetfulness, insomnia, irregular menstruation, and uterine bleeding.

Yuan Zhi (polygala) – It is used for bronchitis, clears phlegm, relieves anxiety, calms the mind, promotes sleep, and aids in creative thinking.

Suan Zao Ren (Jujube Seed): A seed that is highly prized for its ability to calm the spirit, nourish the blood, fight insomnia, restore peaceful sleep, and treat irritability and night sweats.

Mu Xiang (Costus Root) – An herb with multiple properties. It helps manage respiratory problems, flush out toxins, get rid of excess water weight, treat diarrhea and gastric ulcers, end painful periods, regulate menstrual cycles, reduce cold and flu-associated fever, boost immunity, increase white blood cell, improve skin healing, soothe gum irritation, increase vitality into old age, and unblock Qi. Among others, it is also found to have antioxidant and antibiotic attributes too.

Fu Ling (Poria) – A Yin tonic herb that is also sedating, antibacterial, and diuretic. It tonifies the spleen and heart, and combats insomnia, palpitations, edema, anorexia, dizziness, and amnesia. Fu Ling also soothes the mind and lungs, boosts energy levels, promotes urination, and eliminates phlegm. Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Root) – It enhances digestion and cures diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloating. It also speeds up blood circulation and the body’s metabolism while also relieving pain and reducing inflammation.

Da Zao (Red Jujube or Chinese Date) – An herb that is used in cases of poor appetite, fatigue, and weakness. It treats insomnia and irritability, calms the mind/spirit, and builds blood. It is an essential herb that helps all the other herbs in the Gui Pi Tang formula to work together more effectively.
