Summer Fitness and Sports Nutrition

Summer is a wonderful time to stay active outdoors, including fitness focused nutrition and following a few tips to keep healthy during the summer months can be beneficial in a number of ways.  As little as 30 minutes a day of exercise can reap huge benefits.  Exercise has been shown to improve mood, boost energy, help control weight, promote better sleep, sharpen memory, reduce stress, support glucose metabolism, strengthen your lungs and keep your heart healthy. 

Exercise can be fun and adaptive to any lifestyle, some prefer to walk or run while others prefer a more intense workout like aerobics or weight training.  Swimming, dancing, tennis, outdoor sports, and even gardening are all excellent summer exercises.  Yoga, Tai-Chi, breathing exercises, and meditation can all help with increased flexibility, strength, and relaxation.   Experimenting with different exercises can help to find the right one for you. 

Dietary changes can help to increase the benefits of exercise and fuel the body for physical activity.  Beet juice has been shown to boost energy and improve stamina.  Pea protein helps to delay muscle fatigue and support strong bones. Blueberries have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and recovery properties.  Tart cherries are a good choice to fight pain and regain strength according to studies.  Watermelon helps to relieve muscle soreness after exercise.

Sports nutrition is another important way to support strength, endurance, and energy while being active.  Eating a small snack such as a banana or energy bar, about 30 minutes before your workout can help you get going.  Make sure to drink water and stay hydrated before, during, and after working out to replace water lost through sweat. 

Take a multivitamin with minerals to ensure that you are getting all the nutrients your body needs.  In addition, protein shakes can help speed muscle recovery by supplying the amino acids needed for muscle growth.  Green tea is not only a powerful antioxidant, but also supports weight management for those looking to lose weight.  Creatine has been shown to boost testosterone, boost focus, improve memory, and help with muscle growth.
