Herbal Remedies for Cold and Flu

Just when the hint of spring approaches, the cold and flu can still come knocking on our doors bringing a wide range of symptoms with it.  Your immune system is your body’s natural defense system, keeping it maintained is an important step in ensuring you are well protected during the colder months when your immune response is less effective. Your body works hard to balance its immunity, however if essential nutrients are not present it will have a hard time defending itself against external viruses and illness.

In TCM there the two primary types of colds are “Wind-Cold” and “Wind-Heat.” “Wind-Cold” symptoms include: headache, nasal congestion, runny nose, body aches, and aversion to cold. “Wind-Heat” symptoms include fever, sore throat, headache, nasal congestion, and cough. Foods and spices which address dampness are apples, pears, almonds, star anise, cinnamon, nutmeg, honey, and coconut oil. Bi Yan Pian is a classic TCM formula which disperse wind, clears heat, expels toxic heat, transforms phlegm, and helps with sinus congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes.

Elderberry has long been used as a folk remedy for colds, sinus infections, and flu. Studies also show that elderberry extracts have been found to fight off viruses. Researchers believe that anthocyanins, compounds found naturally in elderberries, may be the active component that strengthens the immune system and blocks the flu virus from sticking to our cells.

Other herbs found to help lessen the duration and intensity of a cold are Goldenseal, Echinacea, and Ginseng.  Vitamin C and zinc have also been shown to reduce the duration of a cold and boost the immune system.  It is also important to drink lots of fluids and get as much rest as possible to give your body time to heal.
