The Western scientific perspective notes increased blood pressure arising in a primary sense as initially having no pathological changes early on but ultimately proceeds to arteriolar sclerosis.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine this dysfunction belongs to Liver Yang, "Vertigo", "Stricken by Wind" with pathological changes in the Liver and Kidney. It begins with either Yang excess or with Yin deficiency and gradually becomes both Yang excess and Yin deficiency or becomes both Yang and Yin deficiency.
