About Haritaki

Haritaki is an Ayurvedic herb that promotes the normal function of the liver and the gastrointestinal tract. It also encourages the body’s normal detoxification function, supports the normal spleen, lungs, and colon function, and fosters healthy body mass. In India, Haritaki is believed to increase awareness, intelligence, and energy too. The product is also available as a powder.

How Haritaki Works

The formula helps remove accumulated toxins in the digestive tract as a means to detoxify and rejuvenate Vata. Vata is considered the most important of the three Ayurvedic Principles in the body. In simpler terms, Vata governs all movement in the body and mind and also controls breathing, blood flow, the movement of thoughts across the mind, and eliminates waste. The other two Principles (Kapha and Pitta) cannot move without Vata, so any imbalance of Vata affects the individual’s overall health.

Signs of Vata imbalance include:

  • Chapped/dry skin
  • Panic, anxiety, nervousness, fear
  • Hard stools, bloating, gas, constipation
  • Excess worrying/thinking
  • Spasms, tremors, tics, twitches
  • Interrupted/light sleep
  • Dislike of wind and cold
  • Low body weight

Due to its ingredients, Haritaki is one of the best herbs to balance Vata. This is achieved by:

  • Removing natural toxins from the system.
  • Getting rid of excess Vata.
  • Helping maintain bowel regularity.
  • Supporting complete and comfortable digestion.
  • Rejuvenating and nourishing the tissues.
  • Encouraging internal cleansing.

What Is Haritaki Fruit?

Haritaki is a tree that grows mainly in Sri Lanka, India, and Southern Africa. Its small green fruits are hand-picked one-by-one, dried, and used to make the Haritaki formula. It should be noted that haritaki (the fruit) is one of the most powerful ingredients in Ayurvedic pharmacopeia and the key compound of the most popular Ayurvedic formula, namely Triphala (comes in tablets, liquid extract, and powder).

Its name is often translated as The Animating, The Medicine that Rejects All Diseases, The Life Giving, The Divine Fruit, and The Fearless Against Ill Health, among others. But, it is not only Tiberian healers that use haritaki fruit in most of their herbal formulas. Arab and Ancient Greeks have also been recorded using haritaki; it is even featured in The Alchemist, the popular play.

When it comes to its properties, it is quite famed for:

  • Aiding to pacify Vata imbalances.
  • Supporting healthy digestion.
  • Restoring balance between the three doshas.
  • Increasing prana (the primary essence of Vata – the energy present in every human cell).
  • Keeping the mind adaptable.
  • Powering the body.
  • Bestowing strength, enthusiasm, and creativity.
  • Promoting emotional health.
  • Alleviating sadness and grief.
  • Fighting aging effects.
  • Nourishing and supporting the deepest tissue layer to enhance immunity.
  • Gently cleansing the body.
  • Helping maintain healthy weight levels.
  • Promoting healing from sore throat.
  • Treating allergy-related damage.

Several clinical trials have found that haritaki might also help lower blood sugar levels; hence, treat metabolic syndrome. Further studies are required, though.
