A New Year: A Healthier You

Overall health includes balancing your Qi and internal organs so they work in harmony. TCM advises a balanced diet comprised primarily of vegetables, fruits, some grains, legumes, nuts, and seafood. When your Qi is strong and balanced your body will be healthy and will “ask for” what it needs. Focusing on sleep, nutrition, heart health, and fitness are all great ways to start on the road to wellness into the New Year.

Sleep is crucial as it enables our brain function and balances our emotional well-being. Sleep also helps us make decisions and pay attention. While we sleep our body is busy healing and repairing our heart and blood vessels. Sleep also supports a normal balance of hormones that make us feel hungry and can support normal glucose metabolism. The herbal formula, Seven Forests Zizyphus 18, is an excellent choice for insomnia and resting the shen at night.

Supplements such as magnesium and calcium combined can boost sleep. Melatonin supports normal sleep/wake/sleep cycles, and L-Theanine, an amino acid from green tea, can help boost REM cycles and a deeper sleep at night as well. The most common herb used for sleep is valerian. Valerian has been shown to support deep sleep, speed falling asleep, relieve emotional stress, and help with the overall quality of sleep.

Nutrition & Heart Health

A nutrient-rich diet can keep our minds, bodies, and mood balanced throughout the day. A diet rich in fiber, protein, fruits, and vegetables is a good start; preparing meals ahead of time can be a good way to include these into an on-the-go lifestyle. A good multivitamin is also important to make sure crucial vitamins and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, vitamins B and D, and iron are not skipped.

Natural approaches to heart health include quitting smoking, regular cardio exercise, relaxation, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating a nutritious diet. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and fiber help to support normal LDL cholesterol levels and normal heart function. Oatmeal, salmon, avocado, olive oil, walnuts, blackberries, blueberries, lentils, chickpeas, spinach, and flax seed are all heart-healthy foods. Fish oil supplements, magnesium, guggul, and red yeast rice extract have also shown to support normal heart health.

Exercise is an important part of a weight-management plan; aerobic exercise burns calories and strength training boost metabolism. Alternate workouts regularly to continue challenging muscles and quell boredom. Acupuncture, yoga, tai chi, and relaxation exercises are also beneficial for weight loss and management. Lotus Leaf and Astra 18 Diet remove food congestion and can help begin to bring balance to your digestion and Qi as you work toward your weight-loss goals.

Increasing water intake to about 8 glasses a day can also rev up metabolism, keep your stomach feeling full, and keep you hydrated and energetic for daily workouts. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can satisfy cravings and these nutrient dense foods are crucial for a low-calorie and healthy diet. Removing sugar and refined carbohydrates and replacing them with whole grains, protein sources, fruits, and vegetables can help balance your diet and accelerate weight loss.
