Acorus general notes Acorus Tablets was designed on the basis of formulas used in clinical trials conducted in China for the treatment of hyperactivity and lack of focus the formulas are similar to those used to treat other kinds of brain disorders. The treatments described in the literature ranged from the simple combination of acorus and polygala (to calm the spirit and resolve phlegm) to complex prescriptions that also clear heat and nourish yin.. The inability to focus attention is understood, from traditional principles, to be the result of phlegm obstruction (addressed by acorus, polygala, and curcuma) and/or spirit agitation (addressed by fu shen, succinum, oyster shell, dragon bone, dragon teeth). While phlegm obstruction may result from various causes, the mind and brain disorders mainly occur when heat vapourises the body fluids and yields a phlegm mist that obstructs the so-called "heart orifices" (see Dry Ginger Tablets for the case of cold phlegm obstruction). A childhood onset of the disorder - without there being a severe feverish disease to trigger it - is suggestive of a kidney essence deficiency syndrome, with yin deficiency being a factor in the heat and agitation syndrome (treated here by rehmannia and tortoise shell). A similar etiology is thought to be behind disorders affecting the functions of the brain or nervous system where the underlying syndrome appears to involve heat and phlegm accumulation. If a more tonifying formulation is needed, consider Bu Nao Wan or Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (Pine Mountain) or Zizyphus 18. For adults, consider adding Gincofolin, with salvia and ginkgo leaf to promote circulation to the brain.
